Why be a trainee at Hydro
The start of an exciting career adventure

The Hydro Graduate Trainee Program is a perfect launching pad for a career at Hydro – and a gateway into the exciting world of aluminium. We design the program to fit your individual needs, allowing you to explore the diversity and depth of Hydro’s businesses.

As a trainee, you will be employed by a specific office or operating unit. Under their guidance, you will typically work in three important and challenging job assignments at different locations. You also participate regularly in seminars with other members of the Hydro trainee group, giving you the chance to learn, network and share common experiences.

In general the program takes 15-month and starts each year on September 1, but some positions are closed later.

Examples of placements

Aluminium and Energy

In both business areas, engineering resources are needed in research and development and to constantly improve manufacturing processes. The aim is often to improve our environmental standards, regarding both air and water emissions and working conditions. At Hydro, we employ engineers with degrees in metallurgy, physics and mechanics, production technology and construction technology.

Your role will be to:

  • Develop operational technology for alumina and aluminium production
  • Develop and optimize production processes
  • Provide operational support for the production process
  • Participate in business development projects
  • Assist in maintenance of production and manufacturing facilities

After the program

Finish with valuable skills and a permanent job.

At the end of the trainee program, you will have gained a solid foundation of experience and skills at a global company, a preview of an exciting job – and an offer to become a permanent member of the Hydro team that you trained with. That’s certainly hard to beat!

Ideally, you:

  • Have a Masters degree or the equivalent, with good academic results, in Chemical Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Process Engineering, Metallurgy/Material Science, Structural/Civil Engineering, Cybernetics, Light Metal Production, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Economics or Environmental Energy
  • Have international experience such as an internship or study outside your home country
  • Are fluent in English and potentially an additional foreign language
  • Enjoy travelling and living in different locations
  • Can integrate easily into multicultural and cross-functional working groups
