Description

At Global Banking & Markets we recognise the importance of developing, motivating and retaining our people. This is clearly reflected in our global graduate training programme.

Our comprehensive graduate programme of one to three years (depending on location) is designed to provide you with the skills required to develop a truly rewarding career in one of the world’s leading financial institutions.

The initial training consists of three to twelve weeks’ intensive classroom learning (depending on location), covering an introduction to the financial and capital markets and our distinctive proposition within them. You will then complete a further suite of courses specifically designed to meet your development needs and complement your chosen business area.

Qualifications

We will support you in attaining relevant professional qualifications such as those required by the Financial Services Authority or the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) before you can work in some financial markets or relevant accountancy qualifications such as those offered by the Chartered Institute of Management Accounting (CIMA) or the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Personal development

Our training approach includes personal development and networking sessions, supported through our mentor and buddy programmes. Your buddy is generally a recent graduate who will help you understand ‘how things work around here’ as you find your feet in the first few months. Your mentor, a senior member of the business, will coach and support you throughout the programme.

To further broaden your experience, we offer the opportunity where appropriate to work in our international offices as part of your training programme.

In 2008, we have over 350 vacancies for our global graduate training programme. There are opportunities in all our major business locations and within the following business areas:

  • Debt Markets, Treasury & Investor Products
  • Asset & Portfolio Management
  • Corporates
  • Financial Institutions
  • Sector Corporate Finance
  • Technology
  • Operations
  • Finance
  • Risk
  • Specialised Lending Services

Graduate training programmes

In Global Banking & Markets we offer training programmes each designed to accommodate a breadth of academic backgrounds, knowledge and experience. We use a diverse range of learning tools, including business simulations, case studies and group assignments. The programmes are intensive and you will learn a great deal in a short period, supported every step of the way. You will gain the skills that will allow you to contribute and add value from day one.

There are three graduate training programmes:

  • Sales, Trading and Research/Strategy
You join an initial three-week training programme designed to build up your understanding of the markets and develop your product knowledge. The programme comprises modules in bonds, the high yield market, interest rates, technical analysis, credit derivatives, credit pricing and modelling, securitisation, hedge funds and exotic options amongst others.

You will gain a core portfolio of technical skills that will help you to perform at the highest level from the moment you join a desk. At the same time there will be courses and coaching to help you further develop your interpersonal skills.

  • Asset & Portfolio Management, Corporates, Financial Institutions, Origination, Sector Corporate Finance and Securitisation
On this programme you will learn the concepts underlying the reporting of financial information. You will gain an understanding of basic accounting principles and procedures enabling you to apply these concepts in analysing financial reports and evaluating credit risk.

This will provide you with the analytical tools and evaluative techniques required to develop detailed and persuasive analysis of a client's financial condition, present and future.

Emphasis is placed on business and industry analysis, ratio calculation, financial statement analysis and cash flow development and analysis. You will also gain an overview of valuation techniques and the use of debt products to finance mergers and acquisitions.

Throughout this programme you will have the opportunity to work on case studies and business simulations relevant to the industry as a means of enhancing your learning. A great deal of importance is placed on your personal development and you will have the support and advice of a mentor, a seasoned analyst or associate, who will give you best advice on how to develop and manage your career.

  • Technology
After four weeks of business and technical training, you will join our Technology Development team or our Infrastructure Services & Control Department (IS&C).

Technology Development graduates will be offered either a Business Analysis role or a role as a Developer in a business-aligned technology team. Graduates will have the opportunity to work on at least two different projects during their first year, providing exposure to a variety of financial products and project styles.

Graduates who are assigned to Infrastructure Services & Control will spend their first year working in two different technology areas on six-month rotations. Graduates will each have one rotation within a specialist technical area and one within Desktop Support Services; the latter assignment providing an excellent broad perspective across the business areas.

Assignments within Infrastructure Services and Control will consist of both project work and technology support. The roles provide an opportunity to develop specialist technical skills as well as transferable skills in a challenging service organisation.

At the end of the first year, Technology Development graduates will begin a three-year part-time Technology MSc course as part of their ongoing development programme. The course is also open to IS&C graduates as an option.
